Volkswagen ID. EVERY1: VW's £17k EV Set to Revolutionise The Affordable Market
The landscape of electric vehicles in the UK is transforming, and Volkswagen is making a bold move with its latest concept car. The ID. EVERY1, unveiled on March 5th 2025, showcases VW's ambitious plan to bring an affordable electric vehicle to the masses by 2027 - with a target price of around £17,000.
A New Era of Affordable Electric Mobility
Since the iconic Beetle, Volkswagen has been enabling affordable mobility for millions. Now, with the ID. EVERY1 concept car, the German manufacturer is previewing its entry-level all-electric model that channels the spirit of the much-loved Up! – a car that, despite ending production in 2023, still impresses today with its clear, unmistakable design.
The ID. EVERY1 is described by Volkswagen as a model "from Europe for Europe" and will serve as the spiritual successor to the Up! as an A-segment city car. It will become the entry point to the German firm's range of bespoke electric ID models, positioned below the ID.2, which is set to launch in 2026 at around £21,000.
"The ID. EVERY1 is the last piece of the puzzle on our journey to having the widest model selection in the volume segment," says Thomas Schäfer, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars. "We will then offer every customer the right car with the right drive system – including affordable entry-level all-electric mobility."
Distinctive Design with Charisma and Identity
The ID. EVERY1 features chunky, upright proportions that evoke the Up!, with a design philosophy that Andreas Mindt, Volkswagen's Head of Design, describes as "bold yet accessible."
"Our ambition was to create something bold yet accessible. The ID. EVERY1 has a self-assured appearance but remains likeable – thanks to details such as the dynamic front lights and the 'smiling' rear," says Mindt.
The concept features large LED headlights and a rounded front end intended to make the car friendly and likeable through "a slightly cheeky smile." The front and rear badges are illuminated, and the car sits on 19-inch wheels, with axles pushed to the vehicle's extremities to maximise interior space.
At 3,880mm in length, the ID. EVERY1 is positioned between the former Up! (3,600mm), the ID.2all (4,050mm) and the current Polo (4,074mm). The simple silhouette and side bodywork are intended to give the car a "timeless" and "classless" design, with nods to VW's heritage, including a rear C-pillar designed to evoke that of the first-generation Golf.
Practical Interior for Modern Living
Inside, the ID. EVERY1 offers space for four people and a luggage compartment volume of 305 litres – a substantial increase on the 251 litres offered by the Up!.
The interior features a simple design with a prominent-looking dashboard dominated by a centrally mounted touchscreen. Notably, there are physical buttons for the temperature, heating and volume controls below it – a welcome return to practicality after VW's widely criticised all-screen interfaces in earlier EVs.
"Let's say our usability concept so far was heavily criticised by customers," admits the design team. The screen will have some permanent icons and a flat menu structure, making it more intuitive for drivers who may not be familiar with the car.
Technical Innovations Under the Skin
The ID. EVERY1 will sit on a modified version of the new front-wheel-drive MEB Entry platform, which has been developed for the forthcoming ID.2, ID.2X, Cupra Raval and Skoda Epiq.
It features a newly developed electric motor that produces 94bhp (70kW) and gives the car a claimed top speed of 81mph (130km/h). Volkswagen claims the model will offer a range of "at least" 155 miles (250km).
Importantly, the ID. EVERY1 will be the first Volkswagen Group model to use a fundamentally new, particularly powerful software architecture, developed through a new joint venture with American EV start-up Rivian. This means the car can be equipped with new functions throughout its entire life cycle, allowing it to be individually adapted to customer needs even after purchase.
Making Electric Accessible to All
With used electric car prices falling (as we've seen in the past year), and new affordable EVs entering the market, the ID. EVERY1 represents Volkswagen's commitment to democratising electric mobility.
For comparison with the cheapest EVs currently on sale in the UK, the Dacia Spring is priced from £14,995 and offers 44bhp and a range of 140 miles, while the £15,940 Leapmotor T03 produces 94bhp and offers 165 miles.
But Volkswagen's reputation for quality and its established dealer network could make the ID. EVERY1 a more appealing proposition for many buyers, despite its slightly higher price point. The car's range of "at least" 155 miles also addresses the concern that small electric cars are just for city driving – this is a car that can handle longer journeys too.
A Key Part of Volkswagen's Future Strategy
The ID. EVERY1 is the first concept to be launched since Volkswagen agreed a new 'Future Volkswagen' plan with unions at the end of last year. That strategy includes binding targets for future projects, with a focus on strengthening competitiveness by expanding the existing model range.
The company is following a clearly defined three-phase plan:
Advance: Strengthen competitiveness and expand the existing model range
Attack: Launch nine new models by 2027, including the ID.2 and ID. EVERY1
Achieve: Become the technologically leading high-volume manufacturer by 2030
Volkswagen has said that the production version of the ID. EVERY1 will be built in Europe, though it has yet to commit to a specific plant. It could initially be produced alongside the ID.2 and its siblings in Spain, though it is most likely to be built elsewhere given the group has already committed to producing four models from that location.
The Future of Affordable Electric Mobility
As the electric car market matures, the entry of established manufacturers like Volkswagen into the affordable segment signals a significant shift. The ID. EVERY1 represents not just a new model, but Volkswagen's commitment to making electric vehicles accessible to everyone.
For UK drivers considering the switch to electric, the ID. EVERY1 offers a compelling prospect: Volkswagen quality and character, practical range, and most importantly, an affordable price point. When it arrives in 2027, it could well be the car that tips the balance for many towards going electric.
While 2027 might seem a long way off, the ID. EVERY1 concept gives us a clear view of what's to come – and for those looking to make the switch to electric mobility without breaking the bank, it looks like it will be worth the wait.
