New Volvo ES90 with a Massive 435-mile Range - First Look Before the Reveal

The new Volvo ES90 electric saloon will be revealed on the 5th of March - exciting the EV industry and drivers alike. Boasting a record-breaking 435 miles of range, the Volvo ES90 will have the fastest charging speeds of any electric Volvo to date. This is due to its 800-volt architecture - previously seen in the Hyundai Ioniq Series.

What are the Volvo ES90 Specs?

Volvo claims that their new ES90 will have up to 435 miles of range - competing with the Mercedes EQS (481 miles range), Volkswagen ID.7 (436 miles range), and the Polestar 3 (438 miles range).

Charging this new electric saloon is where the Volvo ES90 stands out from the competition, a 10-minute charge time for up to 186 miles of range, or a 10%-80% charge time of just 20 minutes - helping drivers stay on the road for longer, and unlocking great long-distance travel potential.

This will be the first 800-volt Volvo, with the ES90’s predecessor - the seven-seater Volvo EX90 - running on 400-volt systems. This means that this new electric saloon will benefit from all-round upgrades - from the battery to the motors - creating a completely new driving experience. Comparing the ES90 to other electric Volvos in the lineup - we are likely to see this saloon launch with a 107kWh battery and dual motors for all-wheel-drive.

The Volvo ES90 Design

The Volvo ES90 will likely have a sleek profile with a fastback roofline - sharing some of its design lines with the Polestar 2, whilst providing a sleeker, smoother profile for improved aerodynamics and efficiency. From the rear, the design of the Volvo ES90 appears to be very similar to the EX90 - with a distinctive lighting pattern that includes lights embedded in the rear windscreen.

Tech and Software

Volvo has said the ES90 will be a “software-defined car” that is designed to “continuously evolve and improve through core computing technology, constant connectivity and data” - with a dual NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin configuration, “making it the most powerful car we have ever created in terms of core computing capacity”.

In practice, this means that the Volvo ES90 will likely feature state-of-the-art driver assistance and safety features that will stay up to date throughout the life of the car - creating a much safer electric vehicle through features like advanced driver assistance technologies.

“The Volvo ES90 is one of the most technically advanced cars on the market today and is designed to be improved further with time,” says Anders Bell, chief engineering and technology officer at Volvo. “Built on our state-of-the-art Superset tech stack, the ES90 puts safety at the forefront.”
