According to the SMMT, from February 2022 to February 2023, UK car production rose from 61,651 units to 69,707 units - that’s an increase of 13.1%. The production of electric vehicles, hybrids and plug in hybrids increased by 72.2% year on year, from 15,905 to 27,392 units. This means two in five (39.3%) of the cars produced were electric in one way or another.

This steady rise in production is no doubt a sign of the rise in demand for electric vehicles and as such will have a positive impact on the number of sales as manufacturers keep up with demand.

The UK government introduced salary sacrifice schemes to promote the use of electric vehicles, which is helping make them more affordable for those looking to make the switch to electric. As electric vehicles become more accessible, it is likely that electric car sales will continue to rise along with their production. The SMMT Chief Executive, Mike Hawes said that last month’s growth is a sign of “an industry on the road to recovery”.

Between the surge in electric car production and the recently announced funding for new charge points, now is the time to switch to electric.
