In 1989, Citroën first demonstrated its electric vehicles, which were based on the C15 and C25 truck models. This initiative eventually evolved into the production of the AX Electrique, introduced in 1993 as the next generation of electric cars. The trend continued until 1996 with the Citroën Saxo Electrique, which remained in production until 2003, resulting in the construction of 2,174 units. In 1997, Citroën introduced the Berlingo Electrique, with 1,749 vehicles manufactured. In 2010, they unveiled the 100% electric-powered Berlingo First Electric.

Citroën e-C4

The Citroën e-C4 is an electric version of the C4, designed to compete with the Nissan Leaf, Volkswagen ID3, and Hyundai Kona Electric. Positioned between a traditional hatchback and a small SUV, it incorporates SUV-inspired styling.

A notable feature of the Citroën e-C4 is its commitment to preserving space, distinguishing it from some alternatives. The car maintains the same passenger compartment and a 380-litre boot as the standard C4. Additionally, a lower section is provided for storing charging cables.

Unlike the C4, the e-C4 doesn’t have an entry-level Sense trim level. Instead, buyers can choose from the Sense Plus, Shine, and Shine Plus options. All models include LED headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, a 10.0-inch infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and dual-zone climate control.

Equipped with a 136hp electric motor and a 50kWh battery, the Citroën e-C4 reaches a top speed of 93mph. The 50kWh battery provides a range of 217 miles and supports charging speeds of up to 100kW, enabling an 80% battery top-up in 30 minutes. The range may vary, with town driving approaching the 217-mile figure, but motorway driving may reduce the range to as little as 120 miles.

The Citroën e-C4 is priced between £32,265 and £37,265. Although £7,000 more than the cheapest C4, it remains more affordable compared to the Volkswagen ID3 and Peugeot e-2008.

What’s it like to drive?

The e-C4 displays a soft suspension tailored for town driving, incorporating, 'Progressive Hydraulic Cushions', that provide a fluid-filled bump stop for a gentle response to significant bumps. Navigating through town is smooth as the e-C4 glides over speed bumps, and the light steering aids manoeuvrability in tighter spaces. However, the sloping roofline limits visibility over the shoulder. Rear parking sensors are standard, and models beyond the basic version feature a 360-degree camera system.

On the motorway, the e-C4's soft suspension continues to shine. While some wind noise is present, the car remains aerodynamically efficient, and wind and tyre noise are within acceptable limits. The 136hp electric motor proves competent for motorway driving, delivering a relaxed experience.

Heading onto country roads, the e-C4's weight, 500kg more than a petrol C4, becomes apparent. Negotiating bends reveal dulled responses and a lack of dynamism when attempting to tackle corners swiftly. The soft suspension contributes to overall comfort on rural roads, yet the steering feels light and disconnected, diminishing the driver's potential enjoyment from the driving experience.

Space and practicality

In the front, ample space is provided, facilitated by the compact gear selector that frees up room for the lidded storage box on the centre console. The cup holder is also located here, along with a tray featuring a wireless charger, a standard feature only on the top-spec Shine Plus model. A small slide-out tray in front of the passenger seat, perfectly sized for a tablet, and a pop-out bracket for the tablet enhance the front's practicality. The front seats, resembling armchairs, offer exceptional comfort.

Moving to the back, the sloping roofline slightly tightens the space, particularly noticeable for the person in the middle seat due to its elevated position. The e-C4's floor is not entirely flat, featuring a transmission hump from its shared structure with the petrol and diesel C4. Those in the middle rear seat must share foot space with others in the back. Seatback pockets, USB sockets, and air vents are standard across all versions, with a rear armrest exclusive to the top-spec model.

In the boot, a generous 380 litres of space is available, equivalent to the original VW Golf's boot size. The adjustable boot floor allows for flexibility, and folding down the rear seats expands the capacity to 1,280 litres. Convenient storage spaces on the left and right of the boot floor, along with moulded shopping bag hooks, add practicality. Beneath the adjustable floor, a small space accommodates a coiled-up charging cable, though a front boot under the bonnet is unfortunately absent.

Interior and infotainment

The e-C4 marks a progression for Citroën in terms of cabin design and quality. Overall, it exudes a sense of craftsmanship and cohesion. Notably, the steering wheel and the toggle switch for Drive and Reverse convey a palpable sense of luxury. The front seats, positioned at a comfortable height, offer a pleasant seating experience, especially when compared to traditional hatchbacks.

In terms of technology, the e-C4's infotainment system is moderately competitive in the electric vehicle market. A 5.5-inch screen in front of the driver provides clear and legible information, albeit appearing relatively small. Positioned in the middle of the dashboard, a 10.0-inch screen operates the infotainment system, offering a commendable user experience. Standard features include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connections, facilitating easy smartphone pairing depending on the model. All versions come with a standard-fit DAB radio receiver, with higher-definition screens included in all models except the basic Sense version. The layout of the infotainment system, however, can be confusing, posing challenges for navigating simpler functions and potentially causing frustration.

Beyond the base Sense model, all e-C4 models include a three-year subscription to Citroën Connect services. This subscription encompasses live traffic information, connected navigation, and a speed camera on the dashboard which records data in case of an accident.

Citroën E-Berlingo

The E-Berlingo stands out for its practicality, cost-effectiveness, and generous interior space. The vehicle offers flexibility with Eco, Normal, and Power modes, allowing users to optimize motor performance or conserve battery power as needed. Charging is convenient, with a 100kW rapid charge taking the 50kWh battery from 0-80% in just 30 minutes. At home, a 7.4kW domestic wall box requires 7-8 hours for a full charge.

Available in both five-seater and 7-seater XL configurations, the e-Berlingo comes in base Feel or higher-spec Flair CTR trims. All models feature an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Standard safety systems include Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Safety Brake, Driver Attention Alert, and Cruise Control.

Opting for the Flair XTR trim adds 17-inch 'Spin' style alloy wheels, automatic climate control, folding door mirrors, tinted side windows, and distinctive exterior trim. The five-seat models provide 775 litres of boot space, while the seven-seater XL models offer 209 litres. For additional cargo space, the third-row seats are removable, and folding them down expands the cargo space to a substantial 4,000 litres.

What’s it like to drive?

Despite its considerable size, the e-Berlingo proves remarkably easy to manoeuvre in town, thanks to its elevated driving position and expansive glass area. The presence of large windows all around ensures a 360-degree view from the driver's seat. Negotiating tight car parks may pose a challenge, but the optional reversing camera, available on the Feel Model, proves to be a valuable aid. The steering is notably light at lower speeds, and the Berlingo boasts an excellent turning circle. The raised suspension contributes to a soft ride, effectively absorbing bumps in the road.

On the motorway, wind and road noises are minimal, providing a tranquil driving experience. The steering is precise, instilling confidence in the driver. The positioning of the batteries beneath the e-Berlingo's floor helps maintain a low centre of gravity, contributing to overall stability and control.

As mentioned earlier the e-Berlingo offers the flexibility to choose between five or seven seats. Opting for seven seats requires selecting the longer XL model instead of the regular-sized M version. Both models provide ample head and legroom, ensuring comfortable seating and the rear bench is wide enough to easily accommodate three adults. The convenience of rear sliding doors facilitates easy access for passengers, particularly in tight spaces or close to walls.

The e-Berlingo boasts extensive storage space, particularly in the front. In the boot, the five-seater offers nearly 775 litres below the parcel shelf, while in the XL model, the rear seats can be entirely removed to achieve 4000 litres with all the rear seats folded down. The square-shaped boot eliminates a lip at the entrance, enhancing practicality.

Interior and infotainment

The interior of the e-Berlingo is a direct replica of the original Berlingo, featuring durable hard-wearing plastic throughout. Opting for the top-spec Flair XTR trim introduces brighter fabrics to the interior. The flat seats offer limited support, but the driver's seat is height-adjustable with adjustable lumbar support. The steering wheel's height is also adjustable. The entry-level Feel trim offers an optional Park Assist Pack, including front sensors and a rear-view camera, particularly beneficial for the XL model.

The dashboard controls are chunky and user-friendly. Physical knobs and buttons control the ventilation system, eliminating the need to navigate the touchscreen menu for temperature adjustments. The infotainment system may take some time to master due to its layered menu structure. The standard trim includes an 8.0-inch touchscreen, DAB radio, Bluetooth, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay, along with a USB port. Navigation is an optional feature across all three trim levels.

Citroën E-Space Tourer

The Citroën e-Space Tourer is an ideal vehicle for those needing to transport a large number of people over long distances. It is equipped with a 50kWh battery, providing a range of 143 miles. Charging is possible on all chargers up to 100kW, achieving an 80% charge in just 30 minutes. The car is available in two trims: Business and Feel. The Feel, priced at £46,250, caters to larger families, groups, or individuals seeking to travel with friends. The Business trim, costing £45,600, is designed for commercial use and can accommodate up to 9 people, with configurable seating options.

The Feel trim is available in five, seven, or eight-seater configurations, offering versatility. It has a top speed of 80mph, and users can choose from three drive modes. Eco optimizes range by reducing the power of the air-conditioning system and limiting the motor's output to 60kW. Normal, an intermediate mode, allows the motor to produce 80kW, while Power enhances driving enjoyment and overtaking by utilising the full 100kW output. The vehicle is 4.95 meters long with a 3.27-meter wheelbase. In the five-seater model, there's a generous luggage space of 2,381 litres when all seats are occupied.

What’s it like to drive?

The Citroën e-Spacetourer draws power from a 134bhp electric motor, fuelled by a 50kWh battery pack. The range is affected by the number of occupants and luggage, impacting both distance and acceleration. The e-Spacetourer can cover up to 143 miles between charges, as per WLTP tests, though real-world driving may result in a slightly lower figure. Eco mode softens acceleration and limits air conditioning for enhanced efficiency. Additionally, there's a B mode that enhances the regenerative braking system, replenishing the battery as the vehicle slows down.

Surprisingly, road noise is minimal for a van, but there's noticeable suspension noise over road ridges, and at motorway speeds, wind roar becomes prominent. The steering is slow, requiring careful manoeuvring around tight corners or in car parks. The vehicle's substantial weight impacts agility, leading to noticeable body lean around fast corners. Its size can be overwhelming in city driving scenarios.

Space and practicality

In the driver's seat, you sit higher than in most SUVs, providing excellent road visibility. The vehicle's length may pose challenges for parking, but rear sensors are standard on all trims. Front parking sensors and a rear-view camera are available as additional features on the options list.

There is ample room in the e-Spacetourer. It is wide enough to ensure that the driver and front passenger won't rub elbows, and there are extensive adjustments available for both front seats. In the rear, three adults can comfortably occupy each of the back rows, and exiting is effortless thanks to the sliding doors. Each seat can be moved forward and backward, allowing for adjustable legroom based on the passengers on board. Isofixes are also available. The dashboard features numerous cubby holes, and each seat is equipped with a storage net. However, the storage space in the boot is limited unless you slide the rear seats forward or remove them altogether. It's important to remember to leave space for the boot when parking, as it requires room to swing open when you unlock it.

Interior and infotainment

The interior is pleasant, although most surfaces are covered in hard plastic. Both trims come standard with a sat nav and smartphone mirroring, featuring a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Shortcut buttons for various functions are placed on either side of the screen, and you can also control certain features using buttons and rotary dials on the steering wheel. A small driver's information panel displays essential driving metrics, accompanied by a power meter indicating driving efficiency.

Citroen E-C4 X

Following the Citroën e-C4, the e-C4 X introduces a sleeker design, positioning itself against competitors like the Renault Megane e-Tech and Kia Niro EV. The luggage capacity increases from 380 litres in the e-C4 to 510 litres in the e-C4 X, resembling more of a saloon.

The cabin boasts a straightforward layout with separate climate dials for ease of use, complemented by two large displays, including a 10-inch central touchscreen. Citroën prioritises comfort, evident in the well-cushioned and supportive seats.

Despite the sloping roof, rear passengers enjoy good headroom, and ample knee room ensures comfort for tall passengers sitting behind taller drivers. The e-C4 X is launched with a single battery and motor combination—a 50kWh battery pack with a front axle-mounted electric motor, delivering 136hp and 260Nm of torque. Acceleration from 0-62mph takes 10 seconds, with a top speed of 93mph. According to WLTP, the battery provides a range of 222 miles on a single charge.

Similar to the e-C4, the e-C4 X offers three trims: Sense, Shine, and Shine Plus. All three include safety features, with the Shine trims adding adaptive cruise control and extra assistance tech. All variants feature Advance Comfort Suspension, ensuring a comfortable journey.

The e-C4 X is notably quiet, both around town and on motorways, effectively absorbing bumps in the road without any issues. However, the light steering may leave you uncertain about the front-end grip during acceleration, and the brakes are also quite light, making achieving a smooth stop sometimes challenging.

Its optimal comfort is experienced on the motorway, owing to its light steering, smooth acceleration, and spongy brakes. Overall, it provides an easy and comfortable driving experience.

The e-C4 X stretches to a length of 4.6 meters, ensuring ample legroom in both the front and rear. In the X variant, the seats are reclined further backwards to maximise headroom, although this adjustment may not be immediately noticeable. The boot has a capacity of 510 litres, with additional storage under the floor dedicated to charging cables.

Top-spec models feature a ski hatch for convenient access to the rear and loading longer objects. An extra 33 litres of compartment space is distributed throughout the cabin for additional storage needs. Additionally, there's a retractable tablet holder integrated into the dashboard, akin to the one found in the e-C4.

Interior and infotainment

The e-C4 X is equipped with Citroën's latest infotainment interface, featuring MyCitroën Drive Plus and a 10-inch high-definition central screen. Despite this, a dedicated climate control panel with buttons and knobs for air conditioning and heated seats is retained, along with real buttons on the steering wheel. The 5.5-inch instrument screen is basic, displaying a digital speedometer with a one-mode design. However, the head-up display is notably good.

In terms of connectivity, there are four USB sockets available—two in the lower centre console and two in the rear centre console—providing convenient charging options for passengers in the backseats.
