At The Electric Car Scheme, we want to make switching to an EV cheaper and easier than any other option. Salary sacrifice makes this possible, allowing employees to save 30-60% on any electric car by reducing your salary in exchange for an electric car as a benefit. This makes electric cars an affordable option for everyone.

In this post, we have ranked some of the most affordable cars you can salary sacrifice today!

Citroen Ami Coupe

This ultra-compact car makes it perfect for city driving because of the tight spaces and corners you’ll have to take - it takes up half a parking space! There are no engine noises or vibrations heard inside due to its electric drivetrain. It can comfortably accomodate two six-foot adults side-by-side with plenty of space.

You can charge the Ami in just four hours and it has a range of 46 miles - ideal for most short daily journeys. The average daily journey spans between 10 and 20 miles, so this is perfect for day-to-day use.

Nissan LEAF

The Nissan LEAF was first released in 2010 and was a pioneer for “the world's first mass-market electric and zero-emission vehicle.” This is considered a practical and efficient electric car, embodying the evolution of sustainable and enjoyable electric mobility

The Nissan Leaf has a maximum engine power of 150 horsepower and a range of 168 miles. It has several different features, like ProPilot Assist, which can help you to follow a vehicle ahead at a distance, stop and start again with the flow of traffic and keep you centred in your lane.

Vauxhall Corsa-e Hatchback

The Vauxhall Corsa-e hatchback seamlessly combines iconic Corsa design with electric mobility, offering a stylish and eco-conscious choice for consumers. With its practical interior, brisk acceleration, and ample range, the Corsa-e represents a compelling option in the electric vehicle market.

The Vauxhall Corsa-e has a mileage of up to 246 miles, a 51kWh electric battery and 156ps system power.

MG Motor UK M4 Hatchback

The MG4 hatchback also made an appearance in our post The best electric cars to salary sacrifice in 2023. With its spacious interior, MG Pilot and long-range variant which offers a range of up to 281 miles, it is high quality and one of the most affordable cars available in 2023.

GWM ORA Funky Cat Hatchback

The GWM ORA Funky Cat is a bold entry in the electric vehicle market, known for its distinctive design. It has a unique appearance and electric powertrain, it captures attention as a stylish, sustainable option for modern drivers.

The GWM ORA Funky Cat has a top speed of 99mph and can accelerate from 0-62mph in 8.3 seconds. This car will take a maximum of 5 hours and 24 minutes to charge using a home charger.

Mazda MX-30 Hatchback

This car has a sleek and stylish exterior - an interesting feature is that the rear doors open backwards. The range between charges is 124 miles but Mazda has argued that people do not need extremely long ranges and that fitting a smaller battery is better for the environment (because fewer raw materials are needed).

Overall, this is a great family car which is extremely comfortable with a high-quality interior and exterior. If you are looking for a quicker car, this may not be for you considering it takes 9.1 seconds 0-60 mph. Those with range anxiety may also be deterred from this car.

How does electric car salary sacrifice work?

With The Electric Car Scheme, companies are able to lease a car on behalf of an employee. In return, the employee agrees to sacrifice their gross salary (before any income tax or National Insurance is paid) in order to cover the cost of the car. This will allow employees to save 30-60%!

As this makes it a ‘company car’, it is subject to a benefit-in-kind (BIK) tax. The BIK tax for cars is calculated based upon three factors: firstly, the level of CO2 emissions produced by a car (of which a purely electric vehicle will have none, as it doesn’t give out any emissions); secondly, the P11D value of the car (the on-the-road price of the car); and thirdly, your personal tax bracket.

There is an electric car suited to everyone and The Electric Car Scheme is here to help you get into that driver’s seat.
