Fisker Ocean - swappable battery technology

fisker-ocean-electric-car-scheme

Fisker has recently revealed its intentions to introduce the Ocean in Europe with a pioneering battery swapping technology by early 2024. Instead of connecting your car to a charging point at a service station, you can simply drive into a designated area, exchange your depleted battery for a fully charged one, and continue your journey hassle-free.

This innovation aims to alleviate concerns about running out of charge, given the condition that a robust network of swapping stations is established. A similar service is already being provided by Chinese automaker Nio in parts of Europe, albeit with a limited number of stations in countries like Sweden, Norway, and Germany. Remarkably, China has more than 1,200 such stations.

Fisker has collaborated with a company named Ample to bring this technology to Europe and North America. According to Ample, the battery swapping process takes only a few minutes and proves to be more economical than refuelling with petrol. Since the batteries are charged at a slower rate, there's no requirement for complex high-voltage electrical infrastructure, leading to reduced construction efforts and extended battery lifespan.

Solarsky: full-length solar panel roof

With the Fisker Ocean’s revolutionary full-length SolarSky roof, you can harvest the sun’s rays to generate free energy to support the vehicle’s battery-powered motor.

When fully exposed to the sun, the Fisker Ocean Extreme’s SolarSky can produce up to 1,500 clean, emissions-free miles per year, and under ideal conditions may increase to beyond 2000 miles³ – all powered by pure sunshine.

Your new, mobile power bank on wheels!

The Fisker Ocean offers more than an amazing electric car set-up: with the PowerBank system, your car's battery becomes a versatile mobile power supply.

Through the PowerHouse bidirectional onboard charger, your battery can serve as an emergency power source for your entire home, providing energy for up to a week.

The PowerShare feature links your Fisker Ocean's charging port to another electric vehicle, allowing you to assist fellow EV owners with an emergency charge. Additionally, the External Power Outlet enables you to power various devices and gadgets long after sunset.

Sustainable design: inside and out

The Fisker Ocean showcases a multitude of intricate shapes and distinctive angles. The front end boasts sleek LED headlights connected by a light bar that spans the width, complemented by a sizable lower air intake.

The wheel arches are notably spacious and are filled by 20-inch alloy wheels, though there's an option for larger 22-inch alloys if desired.

At the rear, the standout feature is the ultra-thin LED lights that elegantly curve along the car's sides. Additionally, the rear window is designed to roll down, contributing to cabin cooling or facilitating transportation of lengthy cargo.

Reflecting a prevailing trend in modern electric vehicles, the Fisker Ocean follows a minimalist approach for its interior, a bit like the Tesla Model Y. Embracing this trend, the cabin of the new Fisker Ocean houses very few buttons and controls.

The main question ‘how much range does the Fisker Ocean have?’

The new Fisker Ocean comes in two versions: one with a single motor and another with two motors. The basic Sport model has front-wheel drive and 275hp, allowing it to go from 0 to 60mph in 6.9 seconds.

The upgraded Ultra model has two motors and all-wheel drive, producing 540hp and accelerating from 0 to 60mph in 3.9 seconds. The higher-tier Extreme and limited-edition One models have an extra 10hp, making it a total of 550hp.

All models, except the basic one, have a 100kWh battery. The front-wheel-drive version has a slightly smaller battery and can travel 273 miles on a single charge.

The Ultra model can travel up to 379 miles on a single charge, similar to the Mercedes EQS SUV. However, the Extreme model is the most impressive in terms of range, boasting 440 miles.

This surpasses all other electric SUVs currently available, including the Tesla Model X, which has over 100 miles less range.

To better understand the significance of that 440-mile range...

  • You could drive from London to Edinburgh on a single charge.

  • You could drive from London to Land’s End, and still have 120 miles of range.

  • You could drive from London to Royal Leamington Spa, four times, on a single charge.
